Delighted to have experienced Sense South Africa! In a town with an abundance of choice for gastronomes, this immersive dining experience did not disappoint. Sense South Africa cleverly entertwines all South Africa’s vibrant cultures with food, décor and entertainment.

Sarina, the creator of Sense South Africa chose a remarkable setting -Drifters Brewing Company in Woodstock to showcase her first event, in one of Cape Town’s oldest and hippest neighbourhoods. We kicked off the evening with a tasting of Drifters delicious handcrafted beers (the Stranded Coconut is  recommended), they also have buchu gin on tap! Sarina’s six course tasting menu was exquisitely presented on one long table, thoughtfully reflecting colourful South Africa.

Beautiful Zulu baskets and lively Ndebele pots nestled on Basotho blankets basking in warm candlelight, surrounded by sacks of hops and brew vats. We tucked into tasty Cape Malay Bobotie elegantly served in phyllo pastry, Amagwinye with Kudu potjie, Chakalaka and phutu pap, Natal bunny chow, and braaibroodjies, desserts included milk tarlets served with famous Amarula cream, and ended with Mopani worms for the brave.

One of the highlights of the evening was the electic mix of young local talent presented as “Fruit Jam”, who took us on a thought provoking journey into the lives of young South Africans. I was blown away by the spoken word of Vusomuxi Mpofu (only 20 years old!), performer Julian Wenn entertained us with his punchy, insightful lyrics and the evening was presented by engaging Josh Prinsloo aka the Fruit Vendor. Throughout the evening we watched Lily Brannon paint a masterpiece using only blends of red wine.

Sense South Africa offers an unforgettable, intimate “pop up” dining experience with a difference, an opportunity to connect with and discover South African culture. Looking forward to the next one!
